the years after john got the boot were dark days indeed. with bond scheme farce and marcari appointment.
puts things into respective now i think, we are in a good place right now when you think about it.

Great man, great servant to the club and rightfully a legend, but not the best manager we ever had. That was Ron Greenwood quite comfortably for me.

Remember meeting Lyall once and thinking I was in the presence of greatness. Funny when you read now about how he ran things and his sheer force of character. Proper manager.

Still gutted by the 'Lyall out' brigade who couldn't work out how players being sold against his wishes and lack of reinvestment would affect the team's performance.

My favourite manager.

Face facts though if WHO had been around back in his day he would have got pelters.

Re: 9 years ago today we lost John Lyall
be interesting to see if the media savvy cunts running the club now adknowledge johns passing?
i remember the semi well, no booing. it was lads from the hornchurch coaches that started the singing

Re: 9 years ago today we lost John Lyall
To add context to the booing, it was a sign of disapproval that the minutes silence had been broken by people who did not realise what was being chanted.

I don't go any more and I don't miss it
But Jesus is that 9 years ago?
1. Who is booing when we are singing?
2. Still gives me goosebumps haring that bloke shout it and everyone join in
3. I can still see it, Hislop kicks downfield, Ashton flicks on, Harewood holds off Southgate and lashes it top corner and the world goes

We were top left corner of the end and I have no idea how I ended up near the front with people on top of me

Football is all about those great days that will live with you forever

Re: 9 years ago today we lost John Lyall
After 86 the board settled for what we had then injuries, lack of investment and poor budget signings (strodder,McQueen etc) ultimately cost us relegation and Lyall was the obvious scape goat. Same old west ham, making do and coming up short.

Shame some of the Lyall Out idiots in the chicken run couldn't see that.

Hard to believe that we lost John and Ron in just 2 months of each other

Re: 9 years ago today we lost John Lyall
A respected, decent, gentleman and fantastic manager. West Ham played football, proper West Ham football, when he was manager.

For all his failings at the end, mainly due to lack of investment by the Cearns, he goes down as a West Ham legend.

Anyone who disagrees will answer to me.
